Rise of the Daemon Engines

I'm probably late to the party, but you guys should have seen this on Facebook and Warhammer Community by now.

Yup, the Lord Discordant. I have no idea whether he will have the Dark Mechanicum keyword (most likely not, given how the Maulerfiends and other Daemon Engines do not have the keyword), but he's a new HQ choice for your Chaos Space Marines army. He basically replaces the Warpsmith (well, you can still run a Warpsmith if you want), and provides buffs for your Daemon Engines. No doubt we're going to see a Vigilus Formation with this guy and Daemon Engines. So expect cool Stratagems for Daemon Engines and Warlord Traits for this fella!

And while at it, let's look at all the awesome weapons that he has!

I'm going for the baleflamer. The autocannon doesn't strike me as good, especially since it's a heavy weapon. And you want this guy to be constantly moving.

This guy seems to be an anti-tank and anti-vehicle unit, and looks to be a monster in melee. Run him alongside Maulerfiends and Venomcrawlers and set them upon your opponents' gunline! That would be awesome!

Yeah. Can you believe that? And since he's basically a melee guy, getting him within 6" of your enemy vehicles would be perfect for you. I'm starting to dread facing these things. Think about it - this doesn't just affect my Leman Russ tanks - it also affects my Knights! My Imperial Knights will be hitting him on 4+s in melee (3+s for the Gallant), and if they are wounded and down a bracket, yeah...it gets worse.

I wonder what's going to happen? I'm tempted to get this guy to supplement my Thousand Sons, but we'll see!

Please tell me Traitor Guard is a thing...

Thanks to Warhammer Community, I've found out that Blackstone Fortress is receiving a couple of new models.

Yup. You're seeing that right. Traitor Commissar, backed by his Chaos Ogryn bodyguard.

If you recall the original Traitor Guardsmen we received in the first Blackstone Fortress game, which provided like 14 of them, this is shaping up to be what seems like a small foray into a Traitor Guard army. Well, we know that Games Workshop has officially told us that there will be no Traitor Guard army coming out, at least not this year, but if we keep bugging them long enough...we'll never know. I don't even need the models, I just want the rules! I want my Spireguard armor and infantry to fight alongside my Thousand Sons! That will be awesome!

So what do you think? Do these new mdoels herald the coming of a Traitor Guard army? Or is Games Workshop teasing us with these new models, giving us false hope then snatching it from us with a "nope, we ain't giving ya Traitor Guard!" statement? Personally I do hope we get Traitor Guard so that I can run them alongside my Thousand Sons, but with Games Workshop...you'll never know.

Let's keep praying to the Emperor! (Yeah, my Spireguard and Thosuand Sons are secret Loyalists)

Skitarii Short Story - A Small Arc

The thunderous crack of an autopistol rang through the manufactorum. The haggard-looking laborer looked down at his chest in surprise, numbly noting the dark red rapidly expanding across his greasy coveralls, and then fell from the suspended landing into the vat of molten metal below.

"Anyone else wants a break?"

The supervisor snarled, turning his autopistol on the remaining laborers. No one answered, the whole group of menials turning around to continue whatever tasks their twisted masters of the Dark Mechanicum had assigned them. Even though more fell to the distorted claws and misshapen limbs of the Daemon Engines they were tending to - one unfortunate menial found herself impaled by several lasher tendrils that snaked out from the monstrous Engine she was applying foul lubricant too - they would rather take their chances with the random moods of their Daemon possessed charges than the sure death their supervisor promised.

"Useless trash..." the supervisor sneered under his breath, and cracked the arc whip in his other hand. A devotee of the Cult dedicated to the Lords of Iron, he had risen to his rank through fanatical displays of wanton violence and utter loyalty to the superhuman masters allied to the Dark Mechanicum. Some of the slaves whispered that he enjoyed the favor of the Warpsmith who ruled over the tainted forges of the daemon world, the mighty conquerer and liberator, Kendril Idriss.

At this rate, however, the only thing Idriss would be able to liberate the former citizens of the Imperium from would be their lives.

"What are you looking at?" the supervisor snapped and lashed out with his arc whip. Electric charges sparked into life, electrocuting another menial and causing him to topple into the glowing vat, his body still convulsing uncontrollably before he vanished in a splash of molten metal. Daemonic entities howled and celebrated, their intangible forms jumping from the sea of crimson and orange, delighted at the second meal.

A noise drew his attention, a cluster of slaves trying to reactivate a mechadendrite arm that hovered above another vat of promethium. Apparently the servitor-machine tasked to the job of scooping up the invaliable fuel from the pipes had stalled, and the menials were attempting to pacify its corrupted machine-spirit. The Dark Mechanicum servitor had reacted in typical fashion, going berserk and clubbing two of the panicking laborers into bloody plulps with its hydraulic claw.

"Do I have to do everything myself?" the supervisor snarled as he strode over to the malfunctioning servitor. As it spun around to confront him, its deamonic visage curled into a terrifying leer, the supervisor shot it in the head with his autopistol. The low-caliber round pinged against the metallic layer that housed its once-human skull and richocheted away, but the supervisor continued forward undaunted. Raising his arc whip, he cracked it against the servitor, causing it to back away in a shower of sparks with a low groan. Glaring at the cowering menials who had scattered in the murderous duo's wake, he barked out an order. "Take the damned thing apart, even if you have to use your bare hands to do so!"

As he crossed over the landing to close in on the shuddering servitor, something in the vat of promethium caught his attention. A slight ripple, one that was otherwise unnatural in the unceasing flow of promethium that gushed out of the pipes. Unlike the torrents, this ripple was circular, almost as if appearing in the middle of the lake of fuel rather than being directed from the pipes.

No. He was overthinking it. He was...

A crack of lightning, similar to the one his arc whip made whenever he discharged it, bellowed. The supervisor suddenly froze up, his mind shattered by excruciating pain and his body convulsing as lethal electricity poured through him. For the first time ever, he felt the same effects as the victims he set his arc whip on.

He never got to appreciate that irony. The deadly currents of bluish-white electricity melted his brain, boiling the blood in his head, before he crashed onto the ground, his skin blackening from the superheated rays.

The menials whimpered, but the servitor turned to face the new threat. From the flowing promethium, new figures were rising. Robes slicked with grease, glowing eyes hidden behind augmented optics, and their cybernetic arms clutching galvanic rifles and arc rifles, the silent Skitarii Rangers emerged from the sea of promethium and climbed up into the walkways.

Kree!!!

The daemonic servitor screeched and lumbered forward, its hydraulic claw swinging about wildly. Despite the horrifying sight of the oversized construct lunging forward, two of the lead Skitarii Rangers turned around calmly and incinerated the approaching servitor with their arc rifles. Bluish-white electricity arced out of their glowing barrels, overloading the machine's data-cortex in a second and incinerating what little organic remains it still sported. Smoking, the machine slumped down, the daemonic life fleeing its shattered shell.

The rest of the slaves turned to flee.

The Skitarii Rangers turned to direct their galvanic rifles and arc rifles at them, but their Alpha stopped them with a binaric blurt through the noosphere that connected them.

<Do not pursue. Our priority is to destroy the Daemon Engines. These menials can still be liberated and inducted into the Omnissiah's service once we liberate the forges.>

Without a word, the Skitarii Rangers turned as one and followed their Alpha into the festering armories below.

*

The destruction was brutal and quick. Many of the Daemonic constructs were far from complete, the monstrous machines restrained and helpless in their cradles as the Servants of the Omnissiah set about to complete their destruction. Haywire bolts of deadly electricity from arc rifles coursed through them, searing through the metal and overloading the data-cortexes that housed screaming Daemons. Melta bombs blew holes in the larger ones, limbless hulls that were awaiting their final retrofits before lumbering out into the open to slaughter and revel in carnage.

However, there were a few that had just barely been completed or birthed. With howls of rage, they broke free of their cages, tearing their way through unlucky laborers and smashing metal casings aside. The first, a Maulerfiend, galloped its way through the narrow courseway, smashing two Skitarii Rangers aside with its fists and sending their crushed bodies into vats of molten metal below. Its lasher tendrils impaled a third Skitarii Ranger who was emotionlessly and coldly hammering its thick metal with his galvanic rifle, and despite the damage he had taken, he continued to pour electric-imbued galvanic projectiles into the daemon engine. With a bellow, the Maulerfiend tore his head off.

By now, several Skitarii Rangers had switched priorities and leveled a bombardment of glowing lightning from their arc rifles at the Maulerfiend. It screeched as it rampaged through the lines of the Skitarii, knocking another few off the walkway and toward their doom, but eventually the combined electric forces scorched its circuits and brought it down with a crash. Still not dead, the Maulerfiend reached out with a lasher tendril, which spiked through the ceramite casing of the walkway, and attempted to draw itself.

"By the might of the Omnissiah, grant me enough Motive Force to smite thy enemies."

The Skitarii Alpha, Hexical 44-Luminen, stepped forward and slammed his glowing arc maul against the Maulerfiend's head. Crackling electricity was discharged with tremendous force, sending the Maulerfiend stumbling back. Without any hesitation, Luminen raised his arc pistol and blasted its head, frying whatever the daemon engine possessed for brain. Its glowing eyes winked out, like a flame extinguished, and the Maulerfiend slumped down, its tainted shell smoldering from the heat.

Luminen did not exalt or savor his victory, the part of his brain that once felt human emotions mostly stripped away by his Tech-priest masters of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Not that he had any time too, for a deafening roar sounded over him. On either side of him, two Skitarii Rangers vanished in an eruption of blood and broken cybernetic limbs as high-caliber rounds disintegtated them. From the winding growl, Luminen surmised that another of the daemon engines had succeeded in freeing itself. Linking him through the optics of another of his surviving Skitarii Rangers, Luminen saw that it was a Forgefiend, the terrifying creature trampling over a fleeing worker as it shook itself free of its restraints and aiming its Hades autocannon at the scattered Skitarii, all of whom were automatically looking for optimal positions for cover. A few electric discharges from arc rifles told him that his men were still fighting, but Luminen expected no less. Linking into the noosphere as he used the fallen Maulerfiend as defensive cover, he coordinated the bombardment and had six of his Rangers focus their arc rifles into the Forgefiend. A sudden darkness and loss of connection told him that he had lost Sigma 82-Eliton, but Epsilon 24-Arandt picked up the fallen arc rifle, miraculously undamaged by the high-caliber projectiles, and took his place as efficiently as his deceased comrade. Registering the loss as no more a mere statistical necessity - Luminen directed their fire into the Forgefiend, and when it turned to pick them off with a roar, he rose from his cover and charged, simultaneously firing his arc pistol.

The Forgefiend turned to snarl at him, its daemonic, mechanical jaws snapping to obliterate him, but Luminen ducked and rolled under, just barely evading the metallic death-trap. He rose to his feet and rammed his arc maul against the daemon engine. A burst of electricity sparked between them, the Forgefiend staggering backward as it howled in fury and agony, but Luminen mercilessly swung his arc maul again, his strike erupting in another shower of sparks. The Forgefiend tried to bring its head down to bite him, but Luminen raised his arc pistol, and even without bothering to look, fired off a precise burst of bluish-white lightning that shattered its jaw.

His Skitarii Rangers rallied around him, firing accurate streams of lightning from their arc rifles without fear that they might hit their Alpha. Luminen was the one guiding their aim, so he did not worry about being caught by friendly fire, and even if he was laid low by one of the lethal bursts of electricity, he was expendable. His next-in-command, Beta 22-Gammon, would merely take over and fill in as efficiently as an unbroken cog recplacing a damaged one.

The Forgefiend stumbled, and Luminen, with numerical overlays and threat assessments running over the lenses of his optics, seized the oppportunity and thrust his arc maul. There was a loud crack, and the Forgefiend lay still, twitching from the vast amounts of electricity that continued to run through its smoldering husk.

<33.46% casualties sustained. Losses within acceptable parameters. Continuing the mission.>

Without pausing, Luminen stepped around the fallen Forgefiend, scanning the forge for more daemon engines to destroy. He tapped into the mind of Omni 93-Spex, who was analyzing the forge for more threats with his omnispex. The veteran Skitarii Ranger raised his hooded head and shook it, a strangely human gesture that remained even though his organic self had long ago been subsumed into the machine.

<No other threats detected. Nevertheless, I advise we proceed with caution.>

<Understood, Spex.> Luminen acknowledged through the noosphere. <We will sweep this area of the forge one last time before we head toward the central complex.>

Spex tapped his omnispex again, this time directing it toward the direction of the central complex.

<Alpha Luminen, I am picking up activity in the central complex. The numbers seem anomalous. They seem to be...increasing. But I am picking up no activity of teleportation charges.>

Strange. Luminen understood Spex's confusion. It was as if the enemy was appearing out of thin air. How they conducted such activity was unknown, but if there was one thing the Crusaders of the Machine God were capable of, it was to obtain knowledge and information.

<Very well.> The Skitarii Alpha declared as he ensured that his Tech-priest masters were receiving the data-feed he was recording through the noosphere. <Then we shall see how they are bringing in reinforcements. We will move out immediately once we have secured this place.>

Adeptus Mechanicus reformed!

I have finally finished building my Adeptus Mechanicus army...sort of. Well, not really, but you know what I mean. I'm satisfied for now, and I just spent my month's budget on them, so I will not be adding any more forces to my Warhammer 40,000 army. At least not until I succeed in selling my Deathwatch army (I doubt anyone wants to buy it, though - more than a week and not a single person has shown interest).

What do I have now? Other than the Tech-priest Dominus and Tech-priest Enginseer I kept out of nostalgia (that Tech-priest Dominus was the first ever Adeptus Mechanicus model I bought and held a lot of memories for me), I now have 4 squads of Skitarii. A 5-man Skitarii Vanguard squad with 2 plasma calivers and an omnispex, led by a Skitarii Vanguard Alpha with a phosphor blast pistol and taser goad. A 5-man Skitarii Ranger sniper squad with 2 transuranic arquebuses and an omnispex. 2 5-man Skitarii Ranger squads with 2 arc rifles each, and both are led by Skitarii Ranger Alphas armed with arc pistols and arc mauls. Only one squad has an omnispex, though. I will mostly be using only 3 of these squads so that I can bring other stuff such as Kastelan Robots, Mechanicus Knights or Leman Russ tanks (again, my Skitarii are not meant to be a standalone army. They support my Knights or Imperial Guard armies). And I also used Deathwing Cyclone missile launchers for havoc launchers for my Thousand Sons' Hellforged Contemptor Dreadnoughts. Not perfect, but it works. Good enough for me.

Speaking of Kastelan Robots, while waiting for Forge World to release beta rules for the 30K Mechanicum units, I went and bought Kastelan Robots and Ambots. Warhammer Community suggested that we combine the Kastelan Robots and Ambots from Necromunda for a more industrial feel, and that was what I did. I wasn't able to finish magnetizing one of them, but the other seems to be almost complete. I'll finish up the other next week, but for now I have 2 working Kastelan Robots. Yay, I think? I also kitbashed the Cybernetica Datasmith. Can't say I like the model or the weird power fist, so I swapped his head for a Skitarii Ranger head, and replaced his power fist with a power sword, but I modified the power sword to make it seem like a weapon that doubled his strength rather than just give him AP. I hope he looks cool, but I forgot to take a picture of him. I did take a picture of the kitbashed Kastelan Robots, which were the result of combining them with Ambots. Yay!

Yeah, they look a little rugged and ugly. Sorry. Perhaps most people will tell me how terrible I am at kitbashing and converting and urge me to never try this again. All I can say is...sorry. They are my dudes and I'll kitbash them as I see fit. These guys are kitbashed Kastelan Robots, scavenged from using Ambot parts. They might not look good, but I hope they at least look better than the normal Kastelan Robots, who look...weird. I did my best, and I have no regrets at all. I wonder how they'll work on the tabletop (well, stupid question, they work exactly like normal Kastelan Robots).

Well, we'll see. Amd I'll update with the kitbashed Skitarii Cybernetica Datasmith when I get the opportunity.

Vigilus Ablaze!

Warhammer Community has done an Abaddon Reavealed post, and also revealed the next (finale) book in the Vigilus Campaign! Introducing Vigilus Ablaze!

As you all probably know by now, the Chaos invasion of Vigilus will be spearheaded by Abaddon.

Awesome model, right? I'm betting he'll get new rules to go with his new model too (like Primaris-ized Calgar and the Obliterators). Sounds awesome. We'll see!

That's one hell of a battlefield. Anyway, the Black Legion is leading the assault on Vigilus, but there will most likely be a lot of other Traitor Legions following. I bet we'll get some stuff for Thousand Sons. As with the first Vigilus book, we'll be getting a ton of Specialist Detachments (or Formations) for Chaos. I don't know if we'll be getting new units - it looks like we will be, because Warhammer Community has teased images of new Havocs and promised new Daemon engines and models.

I wonder what new Daemon Engines we'll have. I have always like Daemon Engines, and was considering the option of getting a few of them for my Thousand Sons, but they just didn't fit in my list. We'll see. As much as I like the Fiends, I'm not a big fan of the Forgefiend (the Contemptor Dreadnoughts does the job of shooting 8 Strength 8 AP -1 rounds so much better), but the Maulerfiend does look cool. As I said, we'll see. And those Obliterators look awesome, and I'm tempted to ally in some of them, as well as a Master of Possession for summoning goodness. I don't know if Thousand Sons can take a Master of Possession, though. Oh, well.

To be honest, as cool as the Venomcrawler looks, it really isn't my kind of thing. I prefer the Maulerfiend to the Venomcrawler, but I guess we'll see. Why is it shooting flames, though? I thought it had 36" Excruciator Cannons, not auto-hitting flamer weapons. This is just weird. Perhaps we will have more options in the separate kit? Would be interesting if we do.

I prefer the Onager Dunecrawler, to be honest, but...well, whatever.

I also don't know if there will be Traitor Guardsmen or a Lost and the Damned Faction for Chaos Space Marines. I mean, we did have Traitor Guardsmen from the Blackstone Fortress, but we can't use them in a Chaos army (boo) unless we bring that Obsidian Malleax or whatever his name is. And I prefer to just field a Renegades and Heretics army if all I want are Traitor Guardsmen. We will see. It would be cool if we get Specialist Detachments or a new Lost and the Damned Faction where we can field Traitor Guardsmen, but I won't be holding my breath.

My secretly Loyalist Thousand Sons might be joining the fun in Vigilus, if only to mess up the Black Legion's plans, thwart Abaddon's schemes and save the Imperium, while at the same time fighting back and dodging shots from the Loyalists. Maybe. We'll see.

Is this the Fourteenth Black Crusade? Or are we still in the midst of the Thirteenth? Or maybe it's just the Black Legion doing their own thing rather than lead a combined Chaos force like they did for the Black Crusades? I guess we'll find out! If I find anything more, I'll keep you guys updated.

Rebuilding my Skitarii

Well, I sold my Skitarii quite some time ago. I decided to bring back a small army of Skitarii back for my Knights. I have been experimenting with games, and I feel that the Questor Mechanicus and House Taranis is a better fit for me than House Griffith (sorry) and Questor Imperialis. I'm not sure why, but that is how it is.

So now I have built 3 squads of Skitarii - 1 5-man squad of Skitarii Vanguard (the Alpha is equipped with a phosphor blast pistol and taser goad, 1 guy has an Omnispex, and 2 guys have plasma calivers) and 2 5-man squads of Skitarii Rangers (the first squad has an Alpha with arc pistol and arc maul, and 2 guys with arc rifles, and the second squad has 1 guy with an Omnispex and 2 guys armed with transuranic arquebuses). I have left 5 Skitarii models unbuilt because I don't know what to do with them. Perhaps in future I might get myself some Secutarii, so I might get special weapons that I can equip them with to make a 10-men squad with 3 special weapons (looking at my Skitarii Vanguard with 3 plasma calivers), but we'll see. Right now I have no idea what to do.

Anyway, I hope to run a few games with these Skitarii escorting my Mechanicus Knights! I don't know which forge world to run them in - as much as I want Ryza for the Plasma Specialists Stratagem, the close combat forge world dogma doesn't appeal to me at all. I think I might just go for Graia until I get Kastelan Robots and maybe Kataphron Destroyers - then I will switch to Ryza. For now (because I doubt I'll get any Kataphron Destroyers), I'll just stick to Graia Skitarii, since they fit the theme of 6+++ Feel No Pain alongside my House Taranis-styled House Yato Knights. That Omnissiah's Grace Household Tradition saved my Knight Valiant in a match today! Oh, I'll write a battle report for that soon. I hope.

Missing 1 plasma caliver Skitarii Vanguard because I couldn't build him in time. Built him when I got home, but no point taking a picture of just him.

Oh, if anyone is interested in the 5 new, unassembled Skitarii guys I have left still on sprue, you can let me know and I'll sell them to you for cheap because I don't foresee myself needing them (I doubt I'll be getting the Secutarii, but you'll never know).

Shadowspear contents revealed!

Hey, everybody. Just thought I would drop this on you guys before Natfka inevitably does. Hopefully I beat him to this. Heh.

Anyway, Warhammer Community has released news on the contents of Shadowspear! You can check their post on their site. It's up for pre-order next week if you're interested.

Don't be deceived by the description. The malefic Daemonkin are not a new faction. They are still Chaos Space Marines, just a bunch of Daemons and Daemon Engine without any Daemonkin Keyword.

Anyway, what's inside the box?

The Daemonkin, which includes 1 Master of Possessions, 10 Chaos Space Marines, 2 Obliterators, 2 Greater Possessed and 1 Venomcrawler.

Then you have the Primaris Vanguard Marines, which include 3 Suppressors, 3 Eliminators, 10 Infiltrators, a Vanguard Strike Librarian, a Vanguard Captain and a Vanguard Lieutenant (Games Workshop really love their Lieutenants, don't they?).

And we get mini-codexes too. So they are mini-factions of their own (hence misleading names like Daemonkin). But there's only enough for you to make a Patrol Detachment each for the Chaos Space Marines and the Primaris Marines. The Infiltrators count as Troops, by the way.

Interesting...and also a Campaign book.

According to Warhammer Community, that's not all we'll be getting for Chaos, and with Vigilus II approaching, they promise to release more news for Chaos! So we won't just be getting the Daemonkin alone!
